Acquisition also had a negative impact on income from operations. Furthermore, for some major crops, prices of agricultural products came under substantial pressure in the face of fierce competition. The segment's loss was due primarily to special charges of 0341 million. These special charges related primarily to severance payments resulting from workforce reductions, additional charges from the use of the inventory step-up to higher market values as well as the write-down of research in process. The segment's assets increased significantly in 2000 primarily due to the acquisition. Total assets increased to 06, 607 million in 2000 from 01, 949 million in 1999 due to additions to tangible fixed assets of 0807 million, to intangible fixed assets, including goodwill, of 02, 453 million and due to an increase in current assets. Through the acquisition, BASF obtained major production sites in the United States, France and Brazil, as well as research and development centers in the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil and Japan. The segment's research and development costs increased 44.7% to 0275 million due to the integration of the research and development activities acquired from AHP. These activities include a research and development center in Princeton, New Jersey as well as research facilities in the United Kingdom, Brazil and Japan. Due to the acquisition, the number of the segment's research and development projects increased significantly. Through the acquisition of AHP's crop protection business, BASF expects to achieve annual cost savings of approximately 0250 million as of 2002, with half the amount being achieved in 2001. Due to its presence in key markets and in all crop protection product groups, the Agricultural Products segment expects to strengthen its market position in all major regions and significantly increase income from operations in 2001. 1999 Compared with 1998 In the Crop Protection renamed ``Agricultural Products'' on July 1, 2000 ; segment, sales to third parties remained substantially unchanged in 1999, totaling 01, 745 million, despite a drop in demand, particularly in North America and Western Europe. Fungicide sales increased 4% to 0549 million, although the global fungicide market decreased by approximately 5%. Herbicide sales fell 6% to 0900 million in line with the global herbicide market decrease of 7%. In North America, low agricultural commodity prices and increased planting of genetically modified crops in 1999 increased price competition for crop protection products and the preference of farmers for low-priced, off-patent products. Despite the increase in price competition, sales of the Crop Protection segment in North America increased 5% in 1999 to 0609 million. This increase was mainly due to the contribution to sales of Micro Flo, a leading supplier of generic products in the United States. BASF acquired a majority stake in Micro Flo in mid-1998. More than 70% of Micro Flo's sales are currently in the field of insecticides, growth regulators and fungicides. In Western and Central Europe, lower commodity prices, deteriorating economic conditions for farmers, an increase in the rate of land left uncultivated and reduced fungal diseases as a result of weather conditions in 1999 adversely affected the market for crop protection products. Due to these factors, sales of the Crop Protection segment in Western Europe and Central Europe decreased 4% in 1999 to 0736 million. Despite a significant decrease in the South American market for crop protection products in 1999, sales in South America remained relatively stable as a result of growing fungicide sales. Sales in 1999 were 0249 million as compared to 0252 million in 1998. Income from operations decreased slightly in 1999 to 0195 million from 0203 million in 1998. Expenditures for research and development decreased slightly to 0190 million in 1999 from 0194 million in 1998 and remained approximately 11% of the Crop Protection segment's sales. As a result of research and development efforts in previous years, the Crop Protection segment launched 129.

Women's risk of HIV infection is largely influenced by biological, social and economic factors. Certain sexual practices, such as the use of vaginal drying agents, may also increase women's HIV risk when these practices result in genital irritation and inflammation. The use of vaginal drying agents has been reported in South Africa, 1 Senegal, 2 Zaire, Cameroon, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, Haiti and Costa Rica.3 Despite these reports, the international health community knows little about the prevalence of this practice, whether it increases the risk of HIV infection or how to implement culturally sensitive and effective educational interventions addressing the potential health consequences of usage. The literature on vaginal drying agent usage is indicative of the paucity of scientific data on sexuality, particularly on sexual practices. The studies published to date shed only minimal light on usage within the specific context of the society concerned. Because sexuality is culturally constructed, 4 greater understanding of the cultural contexts in which vaginal drying agents are used is essential to the development of effective interventions. Vaginal Drying Agent Usage Substances inserted into the vagina to ensure dryness and tightness may include stones, leaves, powders, herbs, water, dry cloth, antiseptics, pharmaceutical products, and tissue or toilet paper.5 These agents are used when there is a cultural preference for a dry rather than a lubricated vagina. Reasons for this preference vary. In South Africa, men have reported that vaginal wetness during sexual intercourse is an indicator of a woman's infidelity, and have also associated vaginal lubrication with sexually transmitted diseases STDs ; and the use of contraceptives.6 In Zaire, a wet or large vagina may be considered to be the result of a curse or bad luck.7 In Senegal, drying agents may be used where there is a community belief that the vagina is not simply a natural part of the body, but must bear the mark of artistic "work."8 Both men and women have expressed preference for vaginal dryness and tightness during intercourse. In Zaire, 9 as well as in Zimbabwe, 10 it is reported to increase sexual satisfaction and pleasure for both partners. Hence, lubrication is not considered an essential element in pleasurable sexual intercourse. In Zimbabwe, both college-educated women11 and women who have not attended college12 have reported that using vaginal drying agents made them "like a virgin, " and that this enhanced their partner's sexual pleasure. Some herbs are also believed to "heat up the woman's body, " causing heat and friction during intercourse and heightened male sexual stimulation.13 Cofactors in HIV Transmission? A small number of studies have assessed whether the use of vaginal drying agents enhances the risk of HIV infection. Inconclusive evidence supports the existence of such a relationship. In one prospective study of 634 seronegative women recruited from a labor ward in Lusaka, Zambia, for example, the practice of "dry" heterosexual intercourse, in which the male partner mopped the vagina dry with a cloth before intercourse, was associated with a higher risk of HIV infection.14 Other researchers have focused on the physical effects of intravaginal substances. In Zaire, eight commercial sex workers recruited through the Kananga Department of Public Health were examined and baclofen, for example, drug interactions.

Many assumptions underlie the US Evercare model but those relevant to the attempt to transfer it to the NHS are that: 1. The organisation responsible for the health care of this specific population has an incentive to substitute primary care for secondary care where possible. 2. The case management programme described above will either reduce incidence of health deterioration; or reduce the cost of treating each such events; or both. 3. The case management programme will therefore reduce the overall cost of, for example, pulmicort turbuhaler.

A blend of glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin in a functional drink called Hiro Mobility targets joint health, while vitaminwater's latest flavor, b relaxed, contains theanine, a herbal ingredient thought to promote relaxation. The first wave of functional drinks usually contained a blend of vitamins A, C and E to help boost overall wellbeing, yet beverages today are increasingly developed to target specific health needs or conditions. Lutein is being added to beverages to target eye health while Omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have shown can benefit brain health, are showing up in soymilks and Omega Farm's OmegaMilk. A Swiss company, Emmi, claims to be the first to develop a RTD beverage containing Coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant believed to play a role in cardiovascular and cognitive health. Consumers' desire for specialized functionality means beverage formulators are now faced with the challenge of incorporating functional ingredients backed by strong scientific or nutritional research and casodex.

"Cooling for Acute Ischemic Brain Damage COOL AID ; : a feasibility trial of endovascular cooling." Neurology 63 2 ; : 312-7. AB: OBJECTIVE: To report results of a randomized pilot clinical feasibility trial of endovascular cooling in patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: Forty patients with ischemic stroke presenting within 12 hours of symptom onset were enrolled in the study. An endovascular cooling device was inserted into the inferior vena cava of those randomized to hypothermia. A core body temperature of 33 degrees C was targeted for 24 hours. All patients underwent clinical assessment and MRI initially, at days 3 to 5 and days 30 to 37. RESULTS: Eighteen patients were randomized to hypothermia and 22 to receive standard medical management. Thirteen patients reached target temperature in a mean of 77 + - minutes. Most tolerated hypothermia well. Clinical outcomes were similar in both groups. Mean diffusion-weighted imaging DWI ; lesion growth in the hypothermia group n 12 ; was 90.0 + - 83.5% compared with 108.4 + - 142.4% in the control group n 11 ; NS ; Mean DWI lesion growth in patients who cooled well n 8 ; was 72.9 + - 95.2% NS ; . CONCLUSIONS: Induced moderate hypothermia is feasible using an endovascular cooling device in most patients with acute ischemic stroke. Further studies are needed to determine if hypothermia improves outcome. Level of evidence: 2 Level of design: Fair, N 40 Endpoint: 30 day outcome, additional MRI measures Direction: Neutral surrogate endpoint, MRI, suggests efficacy ; Comments: This small but well designed prospective randomized controlled trial 40 patients with moderate to severe stroke NIHSS 8-25 ; who had cooling initiated within 12 hours mean 9 hrs + - 2 hrs ; from symptom onset. The cooling method was endovascular via a Alsius verify ; catheter in the inferior vena cava. The target degree of hypothermia was 33oC; time to reach temperature in 72% of study patients was 77 minutes note faster than many reported surface cooling studies duration of cooling was 24; rewarming was rate controlled at 0.2oC hr. Additional interventions included thrombolytic therapy if indicated, esophageal temperature probes, BairHugger blankets, meperidine, and buspirone to control shivering, and other "standard medical treatments". Serial MRI imaging was performed to measure growth in infarct volume for comparison with initial diffusion defect reader blinded to treatment arm ; . Hematologic and electrolyte assays were preformed during the cooling and rewarming phase in patients. There was a delay to initiation of cooling associated with the need for the study MRI. No significant complications hemodynamic, hematologic ; were attributed to hypothermia. Technical difficulties were associated with failure or delays to reach target temperatures. Catheter and cooling was reported as being well tolerated in all patients. This study population was of moderate to severe strokes with relatively early initiation of hypothermia. Typical complications and outcomes associated with such strokes were experienced in both groups. NIHSS and mRS scores at 30 day followup were similar between the two groups. MRI findings of smaller final infarct volumes in the hypothermia suggest efficacy of the hypothermia. While neutral in clinical outcome, this study of endovascular cooling supports further study. Georgiadis, D., S. Schwarz, et al. 2002 ; . "Hemicraniectomy and moderate hypothermia in patients with severe ischemic stroke." Stroke 33 6 ; : 1584-8. METHODS: Over a period of 18 months, patients with severe ischemic stroke were treated with CE when the nondominant hemisphere was affected and with MH when the dominant hemisphere was affected. MH 33 degrees C ; was induced with either cold blankets and fans n 11 ; or endovascular cooling n 8 ; . Intracranial pressure was monitored invasively in all cases. RESULTS: Age, sex, cranial CT findings, level of consciousness, and time to treatment were similar between the 2 groups; significant differences were noted in National Institute of Health Stroke Scale NIHSS ; score 20 [range, 18 to 22] and 17 [range, 16 to 18] for MH and CE, respectively ; but were not present when NIHSS score was corrected for aphasia 17 [range, 15 to 19] and 17 [range, 16 to 18] for MH and CE, respectively ; . Mortality was 12% for CE and 47% for MH; 1 patient treated with MH died as a result of treatment complications sepsis ; and 3 of intracranial pressure crises that occurred during rewarming. Duration of mechanical ventilation and of neurological intensive care unit stay did not.
